On the previous post, we talked about the first step to attaining money, power and success, Find It. You’ve now uncovered that hidden, untapped or dormant potential. The next step is to understand the depth of that potential.
Every gift, talent or ability you possess is a potential that exists to be harnessed. Each one is a unique attribute that can change your world if channeled in the right direction. Finding your potential is the first step to unlocking the unlimited power within you – understanding that potential is the next step towards fulfillment. By understanding your potential, you learn how it can work for you.
Realize that all talents, when unleashed, have one thing in common – they bring joy to others. Think about it, the work of a writer is pleasing to readers, the work of an artist pleases … so whether your special ability is cooking, talking, analyzing, organizing, realize that the product of your ability has the power to create joy in others. It is the truth behind multi-billion industries such as entertainment, food manufacturing, hospitality, auto etc. All key players in these industries use talented people like you to create products and services that people are happy to pay for. If they can do it, why can’t you? There are 3 major things we must understand about our talents in order to make them work for us. We must understand out niche, our audience and our triggers.
Understand you niche:
Understanding your niche simply means knowing the specifics of your talent. Each potential can be used in a variety of ways. For example, the gift of ‘talking’ may be used for public speaking, news reporting, sales and marketing, public relations etc. The same gift but different applications. Not all talkers will agree that they enjoy all these uses – however, there are one or two they are inclined towards. That is their niche – an area where they perform naturally and with great satisfaction. Go back to the list you earlier drew up, study each one after and identify what aspects of those gifts work best for you.
Art: Painting, Animation,
Writing: Fiction, Non-fiction, Technical, Biographies, Editorials, Web Content etc.
Cooking: Fast Food, Pastries, Gourmet, Regional, Catering, Healthy,
Speaking: Public Speaking, Counseling,
Sports: Individual, Team, Indoor, Outdoor,
Analysis: Numbers, Data, Theories, Politics, Sports, Design, Critique etc.
Understand your triggers:
Albert Einstein once said that playing his violin inspired his thoughts about how our universe works. For Nicolas Copernicus, it was gazing into the night sky. These great individuals understood what is was that triggered their talents and they were often found doing those things. Little wonder they were able to accomplish so much in their lifetimes. We all have triggers and knowing what they are allows us control the key that opens the secret door to creativity. For some people it is solitude, others, serene places and many others, simply discussing their ideas. When you know what your triggers are, you know how you should be spending your idle time.
Understand your audience
I mentioned earlier that every gift is pleasing to the right audience. All we need to do now is match our niche to our audience. Think of all the people you know (and some you don’t) who will appreciate the product of your talent. You’ll be surprised to learn that you need look no further than your neighborhood. But go even further, think of all the people at work, church and other places you frequent. Think of their parents, their children and you’ll realize that you have a very wide net. Picture your audience vividly and with them in mind, think of how you can use your talent to create something they will cherish. If you can do this, then, my friend, you are ready to execute.
